    Description

Poly(trimethylene carbonate) (PTMC) is an aliphatic polycarbonate synthesized from the 6-membered cyclic carbonate, trimethylene carbonate (1,3-propylene carbonate or 1,3-Dioxan-2-one).

ULI-ECO provides PTMC with good biocompatibility and biodegradability. It has a certain degree of elasticity in the rubber state at body temperature, and is widely used in degradable binding devices, drug controlled release materials, in vivo implant materials and in vivo support materials. It can be copolymerized with polylactic acid and other polyesters to improve the properties of polymers

Due to its predominantly amorphous nature, PTMC is a flexible polymer with rubbery behavior. Furthermore, the biodegradability and bio compatibility of PTMC make them highly applicable as tissue regeneration scaffolds and drug delivery devices in biomedical applications.
PTMC have been used as scaffolds for tissue engineering, especially for certain types of soft tissues where maintenance of mechanical properties is important for tissue reconstruction. PTMC-based membranes have also been evaluated as barriers for guided regeneration of hard tissues such as bone. These membranes perform comparable to commercial collagen and e-PTFE membranes and are ideal for guided bone regeneration.

PTMC is primarily an amorphous polymer in the relaxed state, but it can exhibit some crystallinity, especially when the chains are stretched.
Low molecular weight PTMC is a rubbery polymer with poor dimensional stability, viscosity and mechanical properties. However, high molecular weight amorphous PTMC (over 100,000) is very flexible, has a relatively low elastic modulus (5–7 MPa) at room temperature, is tough, and has excellent ultimate mechanical properties. Compared to most aliphatic polyesters, PTMC is resistant to non-enzymatic hydrolysis, but it is enzymatically biodegradable in the body. It is an absorbable material because the ester bonds can be broken by enzymes, producing CO2 and water. Thus, in vivo, it degrades by surface erosion, and its breakdown products are free of organic acids, preventing potential inflammatory reactions.
