Polyethyleneimine CAS 9002-98-6
Description
Polyethyleneimine (PEI) is a water-soluble polymer also known as polyethyleneimine (PEI). PEI usually appears as a colorless or yellowish viscous liquid that is hygroscopic and soluble in water and ethanol, but not in benzene. This compound is not a complete linear polymer, but a partially branched-chain polymer containing primary, secondary and tertiary amines. This is the fundamental reason for its widespread application in gene and drug delivery, paper reinforcement, water treatment, chromatography, and enzyme immobilization.PEI has a variety of chemical reactivity and can be modified in a variety of chemical properties, including the highest cation density of existing materials, very high activity, and water solubility.
Unilong offers different molecular weights such as medium, high and low to suit your application.

1. Functional additive for coatings/inks/adhesives
As a primer, it can replace traditional chlorinated polypropylene, improving the adhesion of BOPP and PET films to water-based inks (cross-hatch grade 0). As a curing accelerator in epoxy adhesives, it can increase room-temperature shear strength by over 40% and impart antistatic, anti-settling, and flame retardant properties.
2. Papermaking wet strength and retention and drainage aids
Low molecular weight PEI (≈100 DP) can form electrostatic-covalent dual crosslinks with negatively charged cellulose fibers, increasing wet strength by more than 30%. It also acts as a flocculant, increasing whitewater fine fiber retention to 95%, reducing beating and increasing machine speed.
3. Water Treatment and Metal Recovery
The high cation density enables ppm-level adsorption of anionic dyes, surfactants, Cr(VI), Hg(II), and Pb(II). Industrially, it has been used for advanced electroplating wastewater treatment and precious metal chelation recovery, and can be recycled over 10 times.
4. Oil production and water plugging and profile control
Under acidic conditions, protonated PEI can form gels with strengths >1000 Pa when combined with crosslinkers (such as aldehydes and epoxies). This gel is used for selective water plugging in high-permeability zones, increasing oil recovery by 8–15%. It also serves as a clay stabilizer and viscosity reducer, with a temperature resistance of up to 120°C.
5. Semiconductor and Electronic Packaging
High-purity PEI is used as a temporary wafer bonding layer, photoresist adhesion promoter, and low-dielectric film surface modifier, increasing the peel strength of the Cu/PI interface by 30%. In advanced packaging, PEI-nanosilver composites are used as low-temperature sintering conductive adhesives, achieving interconnections at temperatures below 100°C.
6. Emerging Functional Materials
Grafting rigid mesogenic groups can produce liquid crystal polymers for tunable optical films. Reacting with oxidized lignin can produce formaldehyde-free wood glue with a dry strength of 1.6 MPa. As a solid electrolyte additive, PEI can induce uniform deposition in lithium metal batteries, extending cycle life by threefold.

1. Solubility
Polyvinylimide has good water solubility and can form a stable solution in water. In addition, it can also be dissolved in some organic solvents, such as methanol, ethanol, dimethylformamide and so on.
2. Viscosity
The viscosity of polyvinylimide solution is higher and increases with the increase of molecular weight. This allows it to be used as a thickener and binder in some applications.
3. Thermal stability
Polyvinylimide has certain thermal stability and is not easy to decompose at higher temperatures. However, under high temperature and aerobic conditions, it will also undergo oxidation and degradation.
4. Application Highlights
Papermaking Whitewater Purification: Replaces traditional aluminum salts, improves water clarity, and reduces COD.
Electroplating Wastewater Treatment: Captures Cu²⁺, Ni²⁺, and Cr⁶⁺ in one go, ensuring discharge meets standards.
Dye Wastewater: Decolorization rate >95%, reducing operating costs by 30%.
5.It offers a wide molecular weight range of 500–750,000 and can be acetylated, carboxylated, PEGylated, and fluorescently labeled to achieve on-demand design of water-solubility, oil-solubility, and targeting.
6.Comparable to BASF, Catalyst and other brands. The same specifications have more competitive prices.
7.Provide one-to-one technical knowledge. Lock in specific specifications according to customer product applications.
Packed it in 25kgs drum, 50kg drum, 200L drum or IBC drum and keep it away from light at a temperature below 25℃.
