What is PVP K17

PVP K17, with its chemical name polyvinylpyrrolidone (abbreviated as PVP), is a kind of polymer. PVP is divided into different K value models based on the average molecular weight. It is produced by polymerization reaction of N-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) monomer. The molecular chain contains polar pyrrolidone groups and has hydrophilic and colloidal properties.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone K17 is white to off-white powder, readily soluble in polar solvents such as water, ethanol, and acetone, forming clear solutions. Polyvinylpyrrolidone K17 is stable at room temperature, resistant to acid, alkali and salt solutions.

Characteristics

PVP K17 has excellent water solubility and can form transparent and tough films in solutions, often used as a film-forming agent in cosmetics, medicine and other fields. As a high-molecular surfactant, it can adsorb on the surface of particles, prevent particle aggregation, and enhance the stability of the dispersion system. The carbonyl group in the molecule can form complexes with phenols, carboxylic acids, alkaloids, etc., enhancing the solubility of poorly soluble drugs. Low K value models (such as K17) have relatively low hygroscopicity and can adjust the moisture retention capacity of the formula. They are suitable for scenarios where hygroscopicity needs to be controlled (such as solid dispersions). Non-toxic and non-irritating, it is widely used in the pharmaceutical and food industries (such as tablet adhesives and eye drop dispersants). It is resistant to acids and alkalis, not easily hydrolyzed, and can be used within a wide pH range, but strong oxidants may cause it to degrade.

Tablets and capsules: As an adhesive, it enhances the compressibility of granules and improves the formability of tablets. At the same time, as a coating material, it enhances the stability of tablets.
