What are the biomedical applications of PCL?

With the rise of medical aesthetics, a medical aesthetics method has emerged that is easy to operate, has minimal trauma, has quick recovery, and has a low infection rate – the girl needle (filler injection) is becoming more and more widely used in beauty.

It is well known that collagen and elastin are important components of the dermis and some subcutaneous tissues of human skin, and are the basis for young skin to remain tight and smooth. The content of collagen and elastin decreases year by year with age, which not only reduces the thickness and elasticity of the dermis, but also causes the appearance of wrinkles and aggravates the sagging of the skin.

Introduction of ingredients:

Common injectables mainly include hyaluronic acid and collagen materials. With the development of biodegradable materials, regenerative injections have become a new growth point in the medical beauty injectable market. The main ingredients of regenerative injections are PLLA (Poly-L-Lactic-Acid) or PCL (Polycaprolactone), which stimulate the regeneration of human collagen through PLLA and PCL microspheres to achieve a filling effect. Unilong’s micro-crystal polycaprolactone PCL (polycaprolactone cas24980-41-4) will continue to stimulate the growth of collagen, and the new collagen will gradually replace the CMC gel carrier to form a long-lasting and naturally safe tissue scaffold that can last for at least 1 year. It has the advantages of “safer, more natural, longer-lasting, and mass-producible”, and is a high-end upgraded filling material.

Why should PCL particle size be uniform?

We mainly produce PCL microspheres, which require uniform particle size. Uneven particle size may cause disadvantages such as “complex effects during use” and “increased side effects of drug products”. This puts forward corresponding requirements for raw materials and preparation technology. In addition, PCL is non-toxic and biodegradable, and is completely excreted from the human body in two stages. The first stage starts with non-enzymatic hydrolysis and ester cleavage, which is automatically catalyzed by the carbon end groups of the polymer chain to reduce its molecular weight. The second stage includes chain cutting and the beginning of PCL mass loss. The polymer then breaks down and is gradually absorbed by the human body.

Preparation method of PCL microspheres

PCL microspheres are mainly prepared by emulsification and spray drying. Medical beauty manufacturers can control the diameter of PLLA/PCL microspheres to 20-60μm, which is suitable for human injection and metabolism; some products can realize the compounding of PLLA/PCL with other gel materials.

Because of the size and surface characteristics of PCL microspheres (completely smooth spheres), they will not be swallowed by macrophages in the human body. Instead, macrophages will coat the surface of the PCL microspheres and form a single layer of high-quality collagen scaffold, which can provide effective support and elasticity on the face, and have a more immediate, longer-lasting and more sustained therapeutic effect.
