Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a water-soluble high-molecular polymer polymerized from n-vinylpyrrolidone (NVP) monomers, and its properties and applications are closely related to its “K value”. The K value is a core parameter characterizing the molecular weight, viscosity and molecular chain length of PVP (calculated through the Fikentscher formula), and it is positively correlated with the molecular weight: the larger the K value, the higher the molecular weight, the longer the molecular chain, and the greater the viscosity of the solution.
The K value is essentially a viscosity characteristic parameter of PVP in aqueous solution, reflecting the length and entanglement degree of the molecular chain. Usually it can be divided into PVP K12/15/17/25/30/60/90. The difference in K values directly leads to significant variations in the physical and chemical properties of PVP, mainly reflected in the following aspects: molecular weight and molecular chain length, solution viscosity, solubility, film-forming property and film performance, adhesion, solubilization and dispersibility.
Based on the above performance differences, the application scenarios of PVP with different K values in various fields are clearly distinguished:
1.Pharma field
Low K values (PVP K15, PVP K17) :
It has a small molecular weight and good solubility, and is mainly used as a solubilizer, stabilizer and dispersant. For example: Increase the solubility of poorly soluble drugs (such as antibiotics and vitamins); Stabilize the protein or nano-drug particles in the injection solution to prevent aggregation; Improve drug permeability in topical medications (such as eye drops).

Medium K values (PVP K25, PVP K30) :
It strikes a balance between solubility and adhesion, and is the most commonly used tablet/capsule binder (replacing starch and gelatin), which can improve the fluidity of granules and the hardness of tablets. It is also used in coating materials (compounded with other polymers) to enhance the moisture resistance of tablets.
High K values (PVP K60, PVP K90) :
It has outstanding film-forming property and sustained-release ability, and is used in sustained-release preparations (such as sustained-release tablets and implants), delaying drug release by forming a tough film layer. It can also be used as a film-forming agent for wound dressings to form a breathable and waterproof protective film.
2.Cosmetics and personal care
Low K values (PVP K15, PVP K17) :
It has good solubility and low irritation. It can be used in hair conditioners and body washes to increase the smoothness of hair strands. It is used as a moisturizer in skin care products to promote the penetration of active ingredients such as vitamin C and niacinamide.
Medium K value (PVP K30) :
It has moderate film-forming properties and is used in hair gel and mousse to form a soft and easy-to-comb styling film. It is used as a dispersant in sunscreen to stabilize sunscreen particles (such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide) and prevent sedimentation.

High K values (PVP K60, PVP K90) :
It forms a tough film and is used in hair styling wax and mascara to provide a long-lasting styling effect. It is used as a film-forming base material in facial masks to enhance the adhesion between the mask fabric and the skin.
3.Industrial field
Low K values (PVP K15, PVP K17) :
It is used in inks and coatings to disperse pigment particles (such as carbon black and titanium dioxide) and prevent sedimentation. It serves as a brightener in electroplating solutions to enhance the uniformity of the coating.
High K values (PVP K60, PVP K90) :
As a thickener for adhesives (such as wood glue and paper glue), it enhances viscosity and bonding strength. Form a continuous film in water-based coatings to enhance water resistance and wear resistance.
In all, the K value of PVP is the “ID card” of its performance: a low K value focuses on solubility, solubilization and dispersion. Medium K value balance bonding and film formation; High K value highlights film formation, sustained release and high viscosity. In practical applications, the performance can also be adjusted by mixing PVP with different K values (such as K30+K90) to meet more complex requirements (such as the simultaneous need for medium viscosity and good film-forming properties).
