Description

PLGA is a random copolymer, amorphous polymer, widely used in surgical sutures, anti-adhesion films, tissue engineering scaffolds. Compared with PLA, the polymer degradation time can be controlled according to the content of GA, and the material is soft and elastic.

ULI-ECO can prepare different types of PLGA according to different monomer ratios, for example: PLGA 75:25 means that the polymer is composed of 75% lactic acid and 25% glycolic acid. The degree of degradation of PLGA varies with the ratio of monomers, and the greater the proportion of glycolide, the easier it is to degrade.

The biodegradability of PLGA allows it to be used in a variety of medical practices. PLGA undergoes substantial degradation, i.e. catalysts such as water insert themselves throughout the polymer matrix. The ratio of lactide to glycolide PLGA is 75:25 to make microspheres that degrade by bulk erosion. This allows degradation to occur uniformly throughout the polymer.
The flexibility of PLGA degradation facilitates the fabrication of many medical devices such as grafts, sutures, implants, prosthetic devices, surgical seals, microparticles, and nanoparticles.

PLGA is considered fairly biocompatible. Its high biocompatibility stems from its composition of lactic and glycolic acids produced by the fermentation of sugars, making it environmentally friendly and less reactive in the body. PLGA also degrades to non-toxic and non-reactive products, which makes them useful in various medical and pharmaceutical applications.
The time required for PLGA to degrade is related to the proportion of monomers used in production: the higher the content of glycolide units, the shorter the time required for degradation compared to a predominantly lactide material. An exception to this rule is a 50:50 monomer ratio copolymer, which degrades relatively quickly (approximately two months).
